Sony model and firmware decision
Confirm the exact camera path before calling it a Sony SRT workflow
FR7, BRC-X400 and PXW-Z280 belong to different production categories. FR7 is a full-frame cinema PTZ, BRC-X400 is a fixed remote camera, and PXW-Z280 is an operator-led XDCAM camcorder. Their network controls cannot be collapsed into one Sony preset.
Safe outcome: use official model documentation to prove the available transport first. Configure direct SRT only where the installed model and firmware expose it; otherwise keep a verified service, QoS or RTMPS handoff explicit rather than borrowing another camera’s menu.

Can the exact installed camera document the required SRT direction?
Record the full model, regional suffix, firmware and the current official help guide. A family brochure or another Sony model is not enough.
Choose one of three model branches
FR7
Sony’s current FR7 material lists SRT and documents Caller and Listener controls. Use this path for cinema-style remote production where lens, color, raster and audio must be proved alongside transport.

Sony introduced SRT support for BRC-X400 with firmware version 3.00. Confirm the installed version and regional support branch, then keep PTZ control separate from the media session.

Treat Z280 as a field-camcorder contribution decision. Verify the current camera guide and supported service or transport for the installed firmware. If direct SRT output is not explicitly documented, use the verified alternative instead of copying FR7 settings.

Matching endpoint, receiver statistics, decoded preview, recording and approved routes.
For a direct SRT path from a remote camera, a camera Caller toward a reachable Callaba Listener is often the simplest first test. That is not a brand-wide rule. Use the role exposed by the exact camera and confirm the opposite peer and firewall behavior.
Test camera operation and media delivery independently
FR7 and BRC-X400 can remain reachable for remote movement or settings while a contribution feed fails. A stream may also stay connected while the operator loses PTZ control. For PXW-Z280, power, local recording and field-network behavior are part of the acceptance test. Assign separate owners for camera control and media transport.
- Prove local picture, color intent and every required audio channel before the network test.
- Run representative movement and scene detail while watching incoming bitrate, RTT, packet loss and decoded motion in Callaba.
- Make a short Callaba recording and play it back; a browser thumbnail does not prove timestamps, audio or archive health.
- Interrupt the real network path, measure reconnect and record whether the camera or an operator must restart the session.
- If several cameras share the uplink, rehearse them simultaneously at the intended rates.
Use Callaba only after the camera branch is known
Callaba can provide the public AWS receiver or a self-hosted endpoint on controlled Linux infrastructure. Once the source arrives, operators can inspect receiver-side telemetry, see the decoded feed in Multiview, record it and create downstream routes. Callaba does not turn an undocumented camera output into SRT; it operates the handoff the camera can actually provide.
